How do I know if my course is approved before I take it?

CE Requirements Overview

All CE courses must be board-approved in order to be utilized for license renewal. 

Only CURRENT courses are listed on the public side of the board website (search for CEUs by going to www.laptboard.org/CourseSearch). PREVIOUS courses available for renewals are only found through your online Dashboard.

Courses and activities sponsored by the APTA, APTA Louisiana, and CAPTE are automatically approved via Board Rule §193.D. If you completed a course or activity from one of these entities and do not see it listed, please send your certificate of completion to Jessica Alwell at Jessica@laptboard.org.  

Licensees need 30 HOURS of continuing education to renew your 2 YEAR license (unless exempt per Rule §198). Below is a breakdown of the required course categories and course types.

Course Categories - WHAT a Course Will Teach
  • Ethics: covers issues of ethics or professionalism
    • Mandatory; 2 hours minimum
  • Jurisprudence: attend a live seminar hosted by the Louisiana Physical Therapy Board or pass the online Jurisprudence exam
    • Mandatory; 2 hours minimum
  • Administrative: addresses billing or management issues; includes self-help courses such as dealing with stress, anger, etc.
  • Clinical: teaches about a diagnosis, treatment techniques or evaluation methods.

The remaining 26 hours may be any Clinical and/or Administrative.

Course Types - HOW a Course is Offered
  • Online/Home Study: not instructed in live time; may be through a DVD, website or selected readings
  • Traditional/Onesite: a lecture and/or lab based course in which the instructor is physically present
  • Webinar/Live Stream: given in real time by an instructor who is not physically present; usually given via website, closed circuit TV, or phone-in method

There is no maximum or minimum requirement for any of these types. Licensees may complete board-approved courses via any course type they choose.

  7. Healthy Practice Resource
    Licensees can earn 1 credit hour for every 2 modules completed. Select Louisiana Physical Therapy Board as the course sponsor to add credit upon completion. If you complete an odd number of modules and need your hours adjusted, please contact Jessica Alwell at Jessica@laptboard.org.
